My name is Megan Kakimoto, and I am an APIA writer based in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. I graduated from Dartmouth College in 2015 and am currently a Fiction Fellow at the Michener Center for Writers.
My work has been featured or is forthcoming in Conjunctions, Qu Literary Magazine, Southern Humanities Review, and elsewhere. In addition to receiving the Ramblr Fiction Award, my work has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
As a mixed-ethnicity writer of native Hawaiian and Japanese descent, I am interested in exploring native Hawaiian identity and how this identity unfolds in the lives, minds and bodies of women. My work leans into the liminal space of fantastical realism, horror, and science fiction to interrogate the treatment of fellow APIA women and the ways in which physical and emotional isolation take a toll on women’s psyche. Expect ghosts, menstruation, sex, and the Hawaiian landscape in all of its beauty and its horror.
